The Amazing Race 10, Episode 12 :: 12/03/2006

I know I haven't posted about the Race in a few weeks - but only because I know you've been watching it yourself.  Ha!

This past episode, there were only 4 teams left...
Tyler & James, Lyn & Karlyn, Rob & Kimberly, Dustin & Kandice

The first task was a Roadblock, where only one team member could do the task, and they were to find a butcher who would give them raw camel meat, then they'd go to a cafe/grill place where they would ground the meat, season it, then have it grilled... then eat it.  Some comments were made that it tasted like a really good hamburger -- so this one wouldn't have been that bad.  The annoying part of this task was that Rob/Kim and Bama constantly fought during the task.  Rob and Karlyn kept rushing their partners to just swallow their food... Um, just shut up and let them eat!  (They were probably jealous.)

Off to Barcelona, Spain...
Detour:  Lug It or Lob It
(from cbs.com) : In Lug It, Teams had to travel four miles by taxi to the famous street known as Las Ramblas and then travel on foot to the Maremagnum Bridge where they would have to each slip on a nine and a half foot tall costume of a giant from Barcelona's annual Festival of Giants. Once they became a giant, they had to walk more than a mile through the streets to the square known as Plaza de Sant Felip Neri. In Lob It, Teams traveled by taxi nine miles to a town square where they had to take part in a tomato fight that usually breaks out during the Tomatina Festival. They need to defend themselves while searching through a mountain of tomatoes for one that contained their clue.

Funnies:
Kimberly getting pelted by tomatoes.
One of the guys: "Dude, I'm such a hot giant chick right now!"

Then they had to find the pit stop.  They came in this order:
Rob & Kimberly
Lyn & Karlyn (the first all-female team in the top 3)
Tyler & James

Dustin & Kandice, who had incurred a 30-minute penalty for coming in last at the previous pit stop, again came in last and were eliminated.

The top 3 teams are OK, I guess.  Tyler & James were one of my two picks from the beginning.  Lyn & Karlyn are the physical underdogs, but luck could help them if it did so this far.  Rob really wants this (I'm not sure about Kimberly), but they are constant arguers.  In the end, I guess I wouldn't mind any of them winning, with Rob & Kimberly being my least favorite, though.

SEASON FINALE next week!  (after 60 Minutes)  lol

Side note... Survivor: Cook Islands - my picks in order:
1. Yul
2. Ozzy
3. Becky

(Thursday nights... 8pm/7pm CT, CBS)

The Amazing Race 10, Episode 8 :: 11/05/2006

I'm still a little annoyed by the beauty queens.  Why?  I don't know.  They're annoying?  Maybe they left a bad taste in earlier episodes.  Now, I didn't care that they took a different car from the one they wrecked last week.  The rules don't say anything about it - and it's strategy.  Sure, it's not courteous, and that's what is annoying about them, but they didn't break any rules.

Last week, I was somewhat bothered for the first time by Tyler & James (models) in their banter against Lyn & Karlyn (Alabama).  This week, I'm bothered that they are in somewhat of an alliance with Rob & Kimberly - who constantly fight and won't shut up.  Is Rob looking gray and rougher as each episode airs?  And how much more racist can he be?  It's subtle, but it's there.

I'm warming up to Kentucky.  They seem really nice, and they haven't been mean to others, but Mary continues to yell at David like she knows everything and that he is worthless.  Ugh.  Show respect, woman.

MADAGASCAR
The teams arrive at the Black Angel on the lake...
======
INTERSECTION
A team must join forces with another time until further notice.

FAST FORWARD - second of only two in the Race
Joined teams must perform the task together: eat cow lips.

DETOUR
Long Sleep - prepare & deliver foam mattresses to provided addresses
Short Letter - produce & decorate 28 hand-crafted pieces of paper
======

Intersection Teams:
  Tyler & James / Rob & Kimberly
  David & Mary / Lyn & Karlyn
  Erwin & Godwin / Dustin & Kandace

I personally would've been cool with teaming up with the Cho Brothers or Lyn & Karlyn... and maybe even Kentucky.

Eat cow lips?  OK, so I've eaten many different types of exotic or culturally different food.  Would I have eaten the cow lips?  Not sure.  I would've tried it.  Not sure if I'd finish.

Of the Detour choices, from the directions, the mattresses sounded easier.  But I know and have seen friends who have done stuff with crafts and paper that it would probably have been easy as well.

Smart move by Kentucky/Alabama on tying the mattresses together with fanny packs!

Side note - The music arranger for the Race is truly Amazing.  There are some funny moments within the soundtrack.  (Yes, I know, only I would necessarily notice AND comment about it LOL)

Completing the DETOUR separated the teams.

ROADBLOCK - only one teammate can perform
Find 4 rubber stamps
Either Chris or I could have done this one - wouldn't have mattered to me.  (I wonder how frustrating it would have been to do this one!)

FAST FORWARD teams - funny how they thought they were so far ahead - as Kimberly pukes up cow lips.

TEAM 1 - Beauty Queens
I can see how people would like them... or at least warmed up to them since the beginning.  I still hope they lose.

TEAM 2 - Tyler & James

TEAM 3 - Rob & Kimberly

TEAM 4 - Erwin & Godwin

David & Mary (Kentucky)
Because they were in last place at the last pit stop, they needed to arrive to this pit stop first, but since they didn't, they receive a 30-minute penalty.  Any other team can check in before them within that time frame.

TEAM 5 - Lyn & Karlyn

ELIMINATED - David & Mary, with approx. 20 minutes left in the penalty.

I feel bad they were eliminated, but I didn't really want them to win.  So 1 down, 5 to go.

I didn't get to watch this episode until today (Thursday).  So I was trying to avoid talking to people about it, and avoiding the talk shows that would have the eliminated team as guests.  Someone texted me and said that Kentucky would be on "The View" on Tuesday.  I texted back saying that I am going to guess that they got booted.  The return text was some made up crap about them being "lucky" a number of times on the Race and that the team couldn't give out any more information.  Yeah, swift thinking on your feet there, texter.  LOL

Artopolis in Greektown

Yesterday I visited with a good friend of mine, Ruth, with whom I worked at the Christian school.  (I have actually known Ruth for most of my life.  Her son and daughter-in-law are close friends of mine.  And their daughter is my cute little 'adopted' niece. Hi, Emma.  :))

Anyway... :)  We went downtown so I can pick up a birthday present for my niece Raigan (who I will see in 11 days!) and just hang out in the Windy (and very cold right now) City.

For some reason, when we go downtown, we end up at the same places -- Water Tower Place, Crate & Barrel, and the Disney Store.  I seem to always talk my friends into stopping into the Apple Store, so I can dream about my iPod and iMac that iDon't have yet.  This time, though, we didn't go to FoodLife - an awesome food-court-like place in Water Tower.

For supper, we went to Greektown, to a restaurant called Artopolis.  I think the main thing I've ever eaten that was Greek was gyros.  Is a falafel Greek?  Maybe not.  So this was going to be a fun experience for me.

We walked in and it is a cafe/bakery/restaurant.  The aroma of food was so good!  Maybe we were really hungry, too.  We took a glance at the desserts and the breads, then checked out the display of the day's specials.

We started with the Cheese Course.  Their menu said it was a "selection of imported cheeses, featuring Brie, Ch憝re, Smoked Gouda, Edam, Kasseri, and grapes."  Yum!

For the entree, Ruth ordered a Spanakopita, which is a pastry puff filled with fresh leaf spinach, leek, spring onion, dill and feta cheese.  I ordered the Kotopita -- also a pastry puff, with chicken, artichokes, Florina roasted peppers, fennel, and mozzarella cheese).  They were both very tasty.  I kinda wished I ordered the spinach one, though.  One bite and I was hooked.

We saved room for dessert.  There was so much to choose from!  The chocolate mousse was attractive.  The tarts I'm sure were delectable.  Ruth got the Almond Baklava*.  It was very sweet!  (Jana, yes, it was rich. )  Then I got the Malibu Coconut Yogurt Creme.  I wish I took a picture of it... and I wish you could taste it!  It was amazing...  It was very creamy, with just the right hint of coconut at the end of the taste.  It was drizzled with a light strand of chocolate on the top that could only complement the rest of the dessert.

Artopolis was very enjoyable, and I will definitely go there again.

If you ever come to visit me and want to try the place out - remind me!

* Baklava - I made a version of this last week.  For the filling, I used a mix of almonds and hazelnuts.  Very good!  (Not my recipe - so I can definitely brag!)

Did you see `Snakes on a Plane`?

I didn't.  I don't really want to.
But here's a real life story I also don't want to experience.

There's no dashboard warning light for this...

Oct 20, 8:53 AM (ET)
?Reuters

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German car rental clerk had to take apart the interior of a removals van to take out an eight-foot boa constrictor that had escaped from a cloth sack on the passenger seat and slithered behind the dashboard.

Thomas Weber, a rental clerk in the state of Thuringia, told Bild newspaper Friday the snake's owner had brought the van back seeking help for his unusual problem. Weber then took the dashboard apart and the owner slowly pulled the giant snake out.

"The snake was completely content in there and didn't want to come out," said Weber. "Evidently, he liked the warm and cozy feeling near the engine."

The Amazing Race 10, Episode 6 :: 10/22/2006

Another quick hour of racing around the world!

This week, the Race took the seven remaining teams to Kuwait City.  The scenery there was amazing.  Roadblock: The Kuwait Towers... would I have climbed them?  (610 feet above the ground.)  I have sort of an issue with fear of heights, just as the Cho Brothers did, but I think the security of the enclosed ladder and the climbing rope, I probably would've been able to do it.  In the moment, I think Chris would've jumped at the task - and that would've been fine with me!  Also, I wonder how easy that puzzle would have been.

The "Fast Forward"... the fire...
I think that would have been a challenge, but one that I would have taken on.

The Kentucky couple did well at that.  I thought that the Cho's were very nice to let Kentucky go.  I'm not sure what their "strategy" is by doing that (they did say "we came to play a certain way") - but overall, the brothers are just nice people.  (Of course they are - they're Asian!  LOL)

Detour... manual or automatic...
(description from CBS.com)
Manual - Teams have to drive to an area known as Suk Sulaibiya and find a feed lot. Then they need to fill ten 110-pound bags with camel feed to a marked line, transport them 100 yards to a pallet, and properly stack them to receive their next clue.

Automatic - Teams have to drive to the Kuwait Camel Racing Club, where an ancient tradition has been given a new twist. Teams will choose a robotic jockey, attach it to a camel, and, using a voice-activated remote control that causes the jockey to lightly whip the camel, they have to drive it to the end of a 140-yard track, where a wrangler would hand them their next clue.

You never know how an animal would cooperate.  But after seeing the teams do the camel race, that seemed really easy.  I think I would've opted for the filling of the bags, though - but that could've been time-consuming.  I don't know. LOL

Eliminated this week:

Peter & Sarah
Too bad.  One down, three to go.
I personally didn't like the way Peter talked to Sarah, but at the same time, they didn't treat each other well during the Race anyway.

My faves as of this week (in order)...

1) Erwin & Godwin (the Cho brothers)
They are too nice of people.  Is it part of their strategy?  I'm sure they are nice in real life, but are they jeopardizing their changes or do they have something up their sleeve?

2) Tyler & James (models/recovering drug users)

Indifferent (in other words, if they won, I wouldn't be disappointed):

Lyn & Karlyn (single mothers)
